Dennis P. Barba Jr., Ph.D. - Professional Experience
Building Wealth
"I knew that I preferred the driver's seat. You stand a lot less chance ending up as road kill with your stakeholders lying beside you."
Dennis Barba is thinking back to a different place and time. It was San Francisco during the mid 1980's. He was only 19 years old and working for Bear Stearns & Company.
"I saw a lot of selling, a lot of scurrying. What I didn't see was a concentrated, mindful strategy. And I felt that every investor deserved at least that."
After a short time, Barba made a decision. His focus would be on establishing an economically viable and sustainable trust with his clients and partners...and do it in a way that enriched their lives, through strategy and adhering to the fundamental principles of asset allocation, modern portfolio theory and the academic work regarding efficient markets.
Snapshot: 1988 -- Barba joins Cowen & Company. Worked on marketing materials and distribution strategy for the Cowen Income and Growth Fund and the Cowen Opportunity Fund.
Snapshot: 1990 -- Barba promoted to Senior Vice President and Sales Manager for the Cleveland Office of Cowen & Company.
Here Barba began to see his vision become a reality. His responsibilities
were great, his motivation high. At Cowen, he trained new brokers,
developed strategy with Cowen's sales management team and helped recruit
the best young talent entering the marketplace. During this time,
his office ranked as the second
largest producing office in the nationwide system, trailing only New
York City. Barba also gained invaluable experience working on the
company's high yield desk in New York City.
"I learned how to make ideas actionable, not just fascinating."
Snapshot: 1994 -- Barba becomes a partner with J.C. Bradford & Company, and, at the time, is the youngest, non-Bradford family member ever to gain such a position.
Snapshot: 1999 -- Barba establishes himself as the Founder and Managing
Partner of The Oxford Group.
